After asking several of my co-workers a few very, very, very simple American History questions such as: Who was Daniel Boone?
What is the Alamo?
Who crossed the Delaware?
Who said "the British are coming?
To my amazement only one could answer one of these simple questions. So it's time we went back to learning our history. It is so interesting and fun. Not like when I went to school where the only things you learned was times and dates, but something about the people.
Years ago the Bi-centennial series by John Jakes came out and there were wonderful true stories I had never heard before like.......
Ben Franklin had a favorite seat at his pub but one day went in and someone was sitting in his seat. He went to the innkeeper and said "take a bucket of oysters out to my horse". The innkeeper said "horses don't eat oysters" to which Franklin replied "my horse does, take him a bucket of oysters" the innkeeper obliged and everyone in the pub went out to see a horse eat oysters. Of course horses don't eat oysters, but when everyone got up Franklin once again had his favorite seat.
American history is full of wonderful things to learn and be proud of this great country. Lets start by watching the film "The Crossing" with Jeff Daniels. You can rent this film and next week let's have a conversation about it.
Bye for now, Gail

Daniel got most of the 4 questions correct. The Alamo was made famous in the Texas War for independence. He said the Mexican-American War. So just a couple of years off. He got the others correct.
ReplyDeleteYou know learning is such fun. I hope this will help some people start looking at and appreciating our history.
